Free VST Plugins You Should Actually Get

VST Plugins
VST Plugins

There are a lot of free plugins out there, and you can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the paradox of choice. Thankfully, we've done the hard work, so you don't have to. Here’s a carefully curated list of the best free plugins that pretty much any music producer can benefit from.

We’ve been especially considerate of plugins with a wide appeal and scope of use. That’s to say: ones that will likely come in handy to everyone across the music production sphere. In this list, you’ll find the best plugins within each type and category to streamline your decision-making process. You can jump to each category using the navigation below for even swifter browsing.

Are Free Plugins Actually Good?

Whether a plugin is free or not doesn’t automatically qualify it as good or bad. There are plenty of great free and paid plugins, just like how there are plenty of bad ones too. It’s also important to consider whether the plugin is actually useful to you specifically. There are plugins with a wide range of uses, like EQs, compressors, reverbs, etc. There are also plugins for more niche uses, like cinematic tools for those working on film and media. So, like with other possessions in life, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Don’t discount a plugin’s value just because someone tells you it’s bad. Consider its intended purpose and see if it aligns with your production goals.

It’s also worth noting that some FREE plugins are merely trial versions of the full product, intended to give users a sample, just like if you were offered a taste tester at a restaurant. You can still experience the product and aren’t obliged to make a purchase. Yet, the lite version is often just enough to satisfy your hunger, and a friendly gesture at least.

As mentioned, we’ve tried to compile this list to be as general and wide-appealing as possible, whilst keeping those trial-version taste testers to a minimum. That way, all of the best free plugins featured in this list have the highest chance of providing users the most utility across the board.

Can you Make Commercial Music with Free Plugins?

Free plugins can be highly beneficial for a variety of production uses, including in professional/commercial work. Free plugins are often designed with the same attention to detail as paid releases. The developers work hard on the tools to help their users produce high-quality music.

Need Even More Free Plugins?

The list hasn’t even begun yet (scroll down to get there), but if you’d prefer to wade through a bigger pile of free plugins to see what’s out there, we’ve got miles more to choose from, all split into the categories below.

Expansions and Bundles

These are categories of complete bundles/collections. Some of them are also expansions for existing plugins. But, be careful… some of the existing plugins themselves may not be free, so be sure to check before you download an expansion! Features: Up to 200% stereo widening, low-end bypass filter, mono-check button, simple single-slider width control, phase-safe widening algorithm, ultra-light CPU load, no iLok required.
